Institute of Certified NZ Bookkeepers

Dear ICNZB members,

As you as business owners would certainly know, running a small business can be challenging, quite often lonely and at times it may seem almost impossible to achieve a work-life balance. Mental health in the workplace is definitely of increasing importance for business owners and their employees. And we know that the state of mental health in Australian and New Zealand businesses leaves plenty of room for improvement.

At MYOB we have recently undertaken research that revealed nearly a third of SME owners in NZ reported experiencing a mental health condition since starting or taking over their business. You can read more findings from the survey here.

As a result, MYOB has established a philanthropic partnership with Smiling Mind to help turn these statistics around. Smiling Mind offer a free app (which has already been downloaded over four million times) but they also have a world-leading education for kids or run workshops for corporates, teaching people how to take a positive and proactive approach to their mental health.

There is a huge opportunity to improve our everyday lives: if even a small percentage of business owners can be convinced to take mental health more seriously, there will be tangible benefits for them, their staff and potentially a much broader segment of society as even their customers start to feel a difference.

At MYOB we are proud to be working with Smiling Mind to make a difference in mental health. I hope you too can find some time to address mental health in your workplace, and together we can enhance wellbeing and performance for small business owners.
